Condition : you received an ova linux file and the flag is inside

Press Escape repeatly -> hower using arrow keys to "Advanced options for Ubuntu" and press "e" to edit the grub file

Add "init=/bin/sh" at the "linux" parameter and press CTRL X , you will get root shell spawned
